COM Bridge: Connect Outlook Desktop to Virtus Lever Without the Cloud

Complete guide to the Virtus Lever COM Bridge. Connect Outlook Desktop locally, with no cloud transit, for on-premise environments and security-sensitive organizations.

February 24, 2026

What Is the COM Bridge?

The COM Bridge is a local connector built by Virtus Lever for environments where Outlook Desktop is installed locally — without Exchange Online or cloud access.

Unlike the OAuth connection (which goes through Microsoft's servers), the COM Bridge communicates directly with the Outlook application on your workstation, via the Windows COM (Component Object Model) interface.

Result: no email data transits through the cloud. Everything stays on your machine.

Why Use the COM Bridge?

Typical Scenarios

The COM Bridge is designed for environments where a cloud connection isn't an option:

  • Organizations with strict security policies: banking, defense, healthcare, legal
  • On-premise infrastructure: local Exchange Server without Office 365
  • Disconnected or restricted network workstations: air-gapped environments or restrictive proxies
  • Regulatory compliance: strict GDPR, industry regulations requiring full data control

If you have access to Exchange Online or Microsoft 365, the Outlook OAuth connection remains the recommended method — simpler to deploy and maintain.

How to Install the COM Bridge

Prerequisites

  • Windows 10 or 11 (the COM Bridge uses the Windows COM API)
  • Outlook Desktop installed and configured with at least one email account
  • Installation rights: standard user rights are sufficient (no admin needed)

Installation in 4 Steps

  1. Download the COM Bridge from your Virtus Lever dashboard (~5 MB)
  2. Install by double-clicking the executable — installation takes less than 30 seconds
  3. Launch the COM Bridge — it automatically detects Outlook Desktop
  4. Connect your Virtus Lever account — smart triage starts immediately

The COM Bridge runs in the background and launches automatically at Windows startup. Its memory footprint is minimal (~20 MB).

Technical Architecture

Data Flow

Outlook Desktop ←→ COM Bridge (local) ←→ Virtus Lever (local analysis)
                                        ↓
Scoring metadata only → Virtus Lever server

Emails stay on your workstation. Only scoring metadata (scores, priorities, follow-up statuses) are synced with the Virtus Lever server — never the email content itself.

COM Communication

The COM Bridge uses the Outlook Object Model to access items in your inbox. It's the same API used by Outlook macros and classic COM add-ins.

What the COM Bridge Delivers

Local Prioritization

The Domino algorithm runs locally through the COM Bridge. Every thread is scored by impact, urgency, and effort — exactly as with the Inbox Control method, but without sending your emails to the cloud.

The Daily One Thing

Even in on-premise environments, Virtus Lever identifies your One Thing each morning — the most impactful email of your day.

Automatic Follow-ups

The COM Bridge detects threads awaiting a response directly in Outlook Desktop. You're alerted when it's time to follow up, without any email leaving your workstation.

Multi-Account Compatibility

If your Outlook Desktop manages multiple accounts (on-premise Exchange + IMAP), the COM Bridge analyzes them all.

COM Bridge Best Practices

1. Keep Outlook Open in the Background

The COM Bridge needs Outlook to be running to access emails. You can minimize Outlook — no need to keep it in the foreground.

2. Update Regularly

Like any local software, the COM Bridge receives updates. Accept them to benefit from the latest Domino algorithm improvements.

3. Apply the 10 min/day Routine

The Inbox Control method works in on-premise environments too:

  • Morning (5 min): your One Thing, identified and handled
  • Afternoon (3 min): check high-impact emails
  • End of day (2 min): review follow-ups

4. Inform Your IT Department

If you work in a controlled environment, present the COM Bridge to your IT team. The absence of cloud transit and local-only architecture typically simplify validation.

Security & Privacy

  • Zero cloud transit for email content
  • Local communication only between Outlook and the COM Bridge
  • HTTPS encryption for scoring metadata synchronization
  • No network access to email content — everything stays on your workstation
  • Clean uninstall: remove the COM Bridge, no trace left behind

FAQ

Does the COM Bridge work on Mac?

No. The COM Bridge relies on the Windows COM API, which doesn't exist on macOS. For Mac users, connect your account via IMAP or OAuth if your provider supports it.

Are admin rights required for installation?

No. Installation happens in the user profile and doesn't require admin rights. However, some enterprise Group Policy settings may restrict software installation — check with your IT department.

Does the COM Bridge access my emails with write permissions?

No. The COM Bridge uses read-only access via the Outlook Object Model. It does not modify, delete, or move any email.

What are the resource requirements?

The COM Bridge uses approximately 20 MB of RAM with negligible CPU usage. It doesn't interfere with Outlook's performance.

Does the COM Bridge work with Outlook 2016 / 2019 / 2021?

Yes. The COM Bridge is compatible with Outlook 2016, 2019, 2021, and Microsoft 365 (desktop version). It uses the Outlook Object Model, which has been stable since Outlook 2010.
