The Domino Method: One Email Changes Everything

Gary Keller describes the Domino Effect in terms of physics: a single domino can knock over a domino 50% larger than itself. Chain enough of those, and small actions produce enormous results.

Applied to email, the insight is this: not all messages are isolated. Many of them are blocking other things. One unanswered email can hold up a team decision, a project milestone, a contract. Handle it, and the downstream effect is disproportionate.

Identifying the Domino

Most email clients don't distinguish between a message that's blocking three people and a newsletter. They're both unread. They both show the same badge count.

Identifying the Domino requires asking a different question for every email: if I don't handle this today, what gets stuck?

The answer is usually obvious once you ask. An email from your main client waiting for a quote confirmation is clearly more blocking than a software update notification. But without a system that makes this visible, both compete for the same limited attention window.

The scoring approach

Lever's Domino algorithm scores every email along three dimensions: relational weight (who sent it), pattern (what you usually do with this type of message), and cascade (how many other threads depend on a reply).

The result is a single number: your leverage score. The email with the highest score is your Domino for the day.

You don't need to build this manually. The algorithm does the fishing. You do the deciding.

Why one is enough

The Domino Method doesn't promise you'll handle every email every day. It promises that the most important one won't slip through.

In practice, handling the Domino often clears the path for handling three or four others with less friction. The cascade works in both directions.

One email. The right one. Every day. That's the whole model.
